Prof. Chittaranjan Narahari Purandare

Prof. (Dr.) Chittaranjan Narahari Purandare is a senior obstetrician and gynecologist from India. He is known for his tireless work to improve maternal health and women’s health in general. He belongs to the renowned Purandare family of gynecologists, who have been serving for over 110 years in Mumbai.
Dr. Purandare got his MBBS from T.N. Medical College and Nair Hospital in 1974. He then went back to the same school and got his MD in obstetrics and gynecology in 1978. He went on to pursue further studies and experience in the Republic of Ireland, where he became the first Indian to earn the Masters in the Art of Obstetrics (MAO) by research from the National University of Ireland. During his tenure in Ireland, he specialized in labor analgesia and worked at the University Hospital Galway, Ireland.
In 1983, he returned to India and started practicing at Purandare Hospital Chowpatty in South Mumbai and Purandare Hospital Andheri West in the suburbs of Mumbai. He worked at many private hospitals in Mumbai and was named an honorary professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Grant Medical College and J. J. Hospital, where he worked for 20 years and taught hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students.
During his career, Dr. Purandare has held many important positions, such as President of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecological Society in 2004 and President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) from 2009 to 2010. He was also the president of the Indian College of OBGYN and a member of many international OBGYN organizations, such as the Royal College of OBGYN in the UK, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the American College of OBGYN in the USA, the Sri Lankan College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the German College of ObGyn.
Dr. Purandare has won a lot of awards and fellowships from more than 14 countries. In 2009, the Medical Council of India and the Government of India gave him the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy Award for medico-social work. He has also won the Rashtriya Gaurav Award, the Laxmibai Adik Award, the Ganatra Award, and the B. N. Purandare Excellence Award. Both FOGSI and IFS of India have given him the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work.
In addition to his achievements, he has worked on a number of social service projects with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. These projects, such as EMOc, the Audit of Maternal Mortality, and the Near Miss Review in India, have helped reduce the number of deaths of mothers in India. He has also helped with many government programs, like the Prime Minister’s Matrutva Suraksha Yojana, and many health programs, like cancer detection camps for the Mumbai Police, gynecological diagnostic camps all over India, and national family planning programs.
Dr. Purandare’s free service to patients at J.J. Hospital in Mumbai for more than 20 years and his work as an honorary professor at Grant Medical College in Mumbai are both worthy of praise. He has taught thousands of medical students in their first year and hundreds of obstetrics and gynecology students in their second year who have gone on to help the country.
